You tell'em, teach. They're acting all surprised that they have to learn this stuff but you put it in the syllabus you handed out the first day, the one that half of them probably threw out. You might even have posted it online and told them where to find it, and it's not your fault if they're too lazy or inattentive to do it. You did your job, now they can do theirs. And theirs is to learn whatever you dish out to them. You hang tough, teacher. It's your world, it's a tough world, and the syllabus is just the beginning.
